The charity was started in 2010 when local musician Steve Charles could not afford to fund the private treatment he needed in his fight against throat cancer. A group of his friends and local musicians led by Jack Daniels began fundraising for Steve. 

 

He was a local musician himself, who had given so much to the South West area with his music.  The idea was born to ask a friend to help a friend, even if they did not know him directly. 

 

The money was raised and Steve received the treatment. It gave him a few extra months of life but sadly, the cancer spread and he lost his life in June 2010.

However, his legacy lives on with the Steve Charles Help a Friend Fun which is now a registered charity and administered by a group of trustees.
